United Power - the electrical co-op that services my home - held their State-allowed referendum on whether they should be exempted from Colorado Amendment 37 (the renewable energy amendment) over the past two months ending November 17th. The results, now up on their website, are not surprising, though extremely disappointing. The election was highly biased, with the United Power board spending a lot of money printing "we urge you to reject Amendment 37" propaganda; even the ballots were marked with a reminder that the board urges you to vote "YES" for exemption. So it comes as no surprise that the results were 78% in favor of exemption.
So now what do United Power customers do? More on the flip side...
With the virulent nature of the United Power propaganda, a lot of talk has been started on "just how do you get on that board?" It is, after all, a co-op; the customers get to vote on board members, and can even become board members themselves. In 2006, each of the four Districts (GIF image) will be holding an election for one board seat. I encourage anyone who is a United Power customer and is unhappy with the naked partisanship of the current board to consider a run for their local district board. Elections are held in April, with ballots going out several weeks earlier than the election date. I have not been able to find a process for actually getting your name on the ballot yet - if you find out how, please post it!
At the same time, you can read about and sign up for Green Power from United Power here. They offer green power in 100 kilowatt-hour block for an extra $2.50/month per block. The availability of an application for green power is a significant step for United Power; in the past, they have mentioned this program but have had no way of signing up for it - kind of like saying they support green energy but won't let you help...
