A Mountain Stream   Do not fail to learn from the pure voice of an ever-flowing mountain stream splashing over the rocks. --Morehei Ueshiba

Gilpin County Democrats held their assembly yesterday, April 8th. In addition to our delegates and alternates, we were happy to have our State Senator, Senate President Joan Fitz-Gerald in attendance, as well as Secretary of State candidate and State Senate Majority Leader Ken Gordon and Colorado Democratic Party 1st Vice-Chair Dan Slater.

HD-13 candidates Claire Levy and Jim Rettew and local candidates County Commissioner 2nd District Jeanne Nicholson, County Assessor Anne Schafer, and County Coroner Zane Laubhan were all there; Clear Creek Democratic Party co-Chair Tim Mauk attended for Rep. Mark Udall (Tim also serves as Rep. Udall's Compliance Directory). Gilpin BOE member Scott Groginsky spoke for State BOE 2nd District member Evie Hudak.

Thanks to all who attended! Results and details "below the fold" - keep reading...

United Power customers reject Amendment 37

United Power - the electrical co-op that services my home - held their State-allowed referendum on whether they should be exempted from Colorado Amendment 37 (the renewable energy amendment) over the past two months ending November 17th. The results, now up on their website, are not surprising, though extremely disappointing. The election was highly biased, with the United Power board spending a lot of money printing "we urge you to reject Amendment 37" propaganda; even the ballots were marked with a reminder that the board urges you to vote "YES" for exemption. So it comes as no surprise that the results were 78% in favor of exemption.

So now what do United Power customers do? More on the flip side...

This year has been a productive if frustrating one for my photography "habit". My switchover to a digital camera has been a learning experience, but a happy one in the results department. I haven't posted any new photos to my main website since early July, and am just now catching up to processing my Spring, Summer, and Fall images. Real Life work has kept me away from my camera and home computer; now that Winter is settling in to the high country, I have a bit more time to stay indoors and catch up. Two dozen new images are now up in my photography website in the More Recent and Most Recent Galleries. Some samples (photos and captions link to permanent image location, not to recent images collections):

Yesterday, Marylin Musgrave (R, CO-4) had President Dubya in town for a fundraiser. Of course, it wasn't her town, it was Denver - the Brown Palace, to be exact. And oh, was it a love fest. See for yourself:

A Reason for Giving Thanks
A Reason for Giving Thanks

During this upcoming holiday season, we should take time to remember the gift we have been given in the wonders of this world. Scenes like this sunrise at Mesa Arch in Canyonlands National Park are in danger of being spoiled by the efforts of people in power who seem not to care about this Earth. Please take the time to call your Representatives and Senators to oppose the 2006 Budget bill as it is currently written, as it will force the Federal Government into a massive sell-off of public lands without any consideration to their value; the current budget also calls for massive cuts to the needy at a time when more and more people are falling through the cracks of our society.

Time to get this blog active again. I promised a mix of photos and politics; here's a bit of both - an Aspen grove in a local cemetery complements a proud American Flag.

Who supports Referenda C&D? Well, over 100 dedicated souls showed up at the Colorado-Wyoming border on US-287 to demonstrate their support.

(View the gallery!)

Politicians, candidates, college students, teachers, union members, veterans, contractors, and just regular folk all came out for a beautiful day in Northern Colorado for a common goal: responsible funding of the State Government.

The following excerpts are from a diary posted on DailyKos by "Sterling Newberry":
[...] In the wake of September 11th, Americans pulled together to face the crisis, and willingly set their personal interests aside to meet the dangers we faced then. I am going to ask them to do the same now, so that a temporary disruption does not grow out of proportion. I ask all Americans to act out of restraint and be mindful of what they use, so that there will be enough to support the vital reconstruction effort that we are about to embark upon. [...]
Given the near-universal panning of President Bush's initial speech to the nation addressing Hurricane Katrina, it is amazing how much more we could have had under different leadership.
